THIS AND THAT: FEBRUARY 1 (MOSTLY SPORTS)

X GAMES

Snowmobiler Caleb Moore died from injuries suffered when he failed to complete a back flip in the X Games competition in Aspen, CO. I can't say I'm entirely opposed to the occasional crazy person getting killed doing something as unnatural as jumping a 450-pound machine several meters into the air but what's next automobiles? In that it's the first death int he X Games competitions since their inception 17 years ago that's probably just the Weak Law of Large Numbers catching up to them. I'm not being totally flippant about the loss of life as he could probably have been killed driving to the event but sometimes it's best just to say, "No."

PHIL AND TIGER

Phil Mickelson was on fire and looked thinner and younger just missing a 26-foot birdie put on the last hole of the first round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open to score a 12 under par 60. Yes, 60. This coupled with Tiger Woods' win last week at Torrey Pines has us all looking ahead to a potentially great Masters tournament in April. But let's wait and see and just enjoy what has already occurred in the 2013 PGA Tour season. Go "Lefty"!

TIGER IS BACK (AT IT)?

What can I say? Tiger, he likes the white chicks, we all know that and it is reported that he's involved with skier Lindsey Vonn. I wonder if a ski landed in anger hurts as much as a golf club?

A COACH AND HIS SHARPIE

OK, Jim Harbaugh's a flake. We know this because he wears a Sharpie around his neck for no purpose that anyone knows of other than for sports bling.

NICKY SATAN

Vanderbilt football coach James Franklin referred to Alabama's head coach, Nick Sabin, as "Nicky Satan" in a news conference. Funny, but he's since apologized.

Also, when I Googled Sabin this photo of a darling baby girl came up, along with several photos of very attractive women, which I am not including. What's that all about?

THIS JUST IN...

ABC has reported this morning that "millions of taxpayer dollars are being wasted" on forms of TSA airport security. Wow, who would have thought that a huge government agency would waste tax dollars. Thanks, ABC, I guess this type of negative reporting, along with continued bashing of Republicans, is a substitute for real reporting on what's ails the country.

EMMITT SMITH ON COWBOYS

"Emmitt Smith is 'very frustrated' with his former team but he doesn't blame owner/general manager Jerry Jones.

'I think it's very wrong, because at the end of the day, Jerry Jones is an owner and he has the right to do whatever he wants to do with that ballclub,' Smith said on KTBB-FM in Dallas, via The Dallas Morning News."

I like Emmitt. In fact he's my (only) favorite all-time Dallas Cowboy, except maybe for Lance Alworth but he only played with them at the end of his career. Anyway, It's probably good PR for Emmitt to not bag on Jones which is the only reason he isn't. Hell, almost everyone else in Dallas blames Jones for the Cowboy's string of disappointing seasons as they've won only one playoff game since 1996, the year after they beat the Steelers in SB XXX.

MARINO

Dan Marino is a good Catholic. His middle name is Constantine for crying out loud. He was a star at Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and has had six kids with his wife of 28 years... and one, that we now know of, NOT with his wife. Seven kids? I said he was a good Catholic.

His lover, Donna Savattere, apparently is living the good life in New York and the Hamptons due in part to the alleged millions that Marino paid her for her silence and, hopefully, child support. She is also now married to another tall, good looking guy, who is a banker, not a former (American) football player. Her husband was raised in London.

I wonder what his wife thinks about the cash she didn't get to spend?
