HISTORICAL EVENTS

399 - Greek philosopher Socrates is sentenced to death after a historical clash with Athenian society and politics.


1898  A mysterious explosion occurs on board the U.S. battleship Maine in the harbor at Cuba initiating the Spanish-American War.


1903 – The first teddy bear goes on sale, using the nickname of President Theodore Roosevelt.


1950  The USSR (Stalin) and the Peoples' Republic of China (Mao) sign a mutual defense treaty.

1961 – U.S. figure staking team is wiped-out in plane crash in Berg-Kampenhout, Belgium. Shortly after the crash the U.S. Figure Skating Fund was established to provide assistance to  elite U.S. skaters.
