1587  Mary (Stewart), Queen of Scots, is beheaded for treason by her sister, England's Elizabeth I.


1887  President Stephen Grover Cleveland signs the Dawes Severality Act into law dividing reservations commonly held by Native American tribes.


1924  First execution by lethal gas in Carson City, Nevada. Tong Lee was executed for murdering a rival gang member.


1978  New England digs out after blizzard. Hmm, coincidence?

1820 – William Tecumseh Sherman is born. His middle name came from that of the great Shawnee chief, Tecumseh. The name was so favored that his family referred to him as "Tecumseh" until the age of 8 or 9. In the American Civil War he led the Union army that smashed the Confederacy by driving through Georgia to the sea. His famous quote is, "Some say war is all glory, I say war is all hell" which is famously misquoted simply as "War is hell." Sherman died in 1891.


1906  Chester F. Carlson, inventor of the photocopier, was born in Seattle, WA (at the original Starbucks).

1725 - Russian Tsar Peter the Great, Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanovdies. He ruled both the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire.

1956 - Baeball legend, Connie Mack (Cornelius McGillicuddy, Sr.), died. He was a player, manager and owner. He was the longest-serving manager in baseball history (7755 games) and was famous for wearing a suite and tie as well as a straw hat instead of a uniform when he managed.
