1794 – Robert Forsythe, a U.S. Marshal is killed in Augusta, Georgia when trying to serve court papers, the first Marshal to die while carrying out his duties.
1861 – Alabama becomes the fourth state to secede from the Union prior to the United Sates Civil War.
1940 – Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., becomes the U.S. Army's first African-American general, his son would later become a general as well.
1980 – Honda announces it will build the first Japanese-owned passenger-car assembly plant in the United States–in Ohio.
