1793 – King Louis XVI is executed during the French Revolution.


1944 - 649 British bombers attack Magdeburg, Germany to destroy synthetic oil refineries. It was estimated that 20,000 to 40,000 civilians were killed. Read and eyewitness report.


1968 – The Battle for Khe Sanh, South Vitenam, begins. The battle lasted 77 days, until April 8, 1968 (per U.S. military). On July 8, 1968 the Americans destroyed the base complex and withdrew from the area.


1977 – President James Earl Carter pardons draft dodgersA total of 209,517 men were accused of violating draft laws, while another 360,000 were never formally charged.

1824 
– Thomas Johnathan "Stonewall" Jackson was born in Clarksburg, Virginia. He died at the Batlle of Chacellorsville, May 10, 1863.

1940 – Jack William Nicklaus, Columbus Ohio, golfer. Nicknames "The Golden Bear" he won 18 major professional golf championships, the most in golf history to date.
