HISTORICAL EVENTS


1556 - The deadliest earthquake to date in history rocks China killing 830,000.

1849 - Elizabeth Blackwell, first woman M.D., granted medical degree from Geneva College.

1922 - Insulin injection aids diabetic patient.

1957 - Toy company Wham-O produces the first Frisbee. It's name was taken from the Frisbee Pie Company's tin plates. Wham-O's first product was the Hola-Hoop and also produced the the Slip and Slide and Super Ball. The company was begun by Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin.

1991 - Videotaped murder leads to convictions in Texas.

1737 - John Hancock, merchant/statesman, (first signatory of the Declaration of Independence), (d. 1793).




1832 - Edouard Manet, Paris, French impressionist painter (Olympia, The Luncheon on the Grass), (d. 1883)



1930 - Derek Walcott, poet playwright and Nobel Laureate (Omeros), currently Professor at the University of Essex.




FAMOUS DEATHS



1944 - Edvard Munch, Norwegian painter (The Scream), dies at 80.



1989 - Salvador Dalí, Catalan surealist artist (b. 1904).
