THIS DAY IN HISTORY – JANUARY 12

HISTORICAL EVENTS

1879 The Anglo-Zulu War begins. British troops — under Lieutenant General Frederic Augustus — invade Zululand from the southern African republic of Natal.

1906 –  First time the Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 100 (100.26).

1915  The U.S. Congress establishes Rocky Mountain National Park, CO.

1918  Finland's "Mosaic Confessors" law went into effect, making Finnish Jews full citizens.

1932  Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. retires from the Supreme Court at age 90.

1952  University of Tennessee admits it's first black student.

1991   The U.S. Congress gives the green light to military action against Iraq in the Persian Gulf Crisis.

FAMOUS BIRTHS

1737  John Hancock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence.

1876  Jack London, American writer ("The Call of the Wild", "The Sea Wolf", "Heart of Darkness").

1964  Jeff Bezos, Albuquerque New Mexico, American entrepreneur and founder of Amazon.com. In the 1980s we "missed by that much" at becoming multi-millionaires when we became friends with his parents in Norway but not close enough friends to be asked to become some of the original investors in Amazon. I just shake my head every time I think about it.

FAMOUS DEATHS

1976 Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, English mystery writer ("10 Little Indians", "The Moustrap"), dies at 85.

2012  Charles H. Price III, American businessman and diplomat, dies at 80.
