1861  The Crittenden Compromise is killed in the U.S. Senate prior to outbreak of the American Civil War.



1919  Prohibition (18th Amendment) goes into effect. It was repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933.

1942 – Hollywood star Carole Lombard (33), the wife of Clark Gable, is killed in a plane crash returning from a WWII Bond tour.

1853 – Andre Michelin, France, industrialist/tire manufacturer, founded the Michelin Tyre Company (Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin) in 1888.

1911 Jay Hanna "Dizzy" Dean, also known as Jerome Herman Dean, Hall of Fame baseball pitcher (St Louis Cardinals) in Lucas, AR. Died in 1974. Dean was best known for leading the 1934 Cardinal "Gashouse Gang" team with a 30–7 record and a 2.66 ERA during the regular season.


1934 – American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, was born in Bedford, PA.
